Chapter 80

Grace Harper's face paled.

Jason Harper had brought up her unemployment again.

She had quit her job because her mother-in-law forced her to prepare for pregnancy at home.

Even though she didn't work outside, she handled every household chore herself.

Did housework not count as work?

"Brother-in-law, I really can't help you... I'm just a junior employee. I don't have that kind of authority." Vivian Bennett shook her head apologetically.

If she had that kind of influence, she would have helped her cousin's husband for Grace's sake.

But she was merely the most ordinary employee at Sullivan Group. Her voice carried no weight. How could she possibly influence hiring decisions?

"Vivian, stop hiding the truth from me! Manager Lily Evans told me personally that the big boss himself appointed you to the headquarters!" Jason's gaze was meaningful.

Vivian's fingers trembled.

Her brother-in-law was clearly implying she had used improper means to get promoted.

"Brother-in-law, you've misunderstood. I'm not familiar with the big boss at all!" she explained urgently.

Jason's face darkened instantly. "Not familiar?"

Grace quickly tried to smooth things over. "I told you before that Vivian has no connection with the big boss!"

She knew her cousin's character.

Vivian would never do something like that.

Her husband's idea of using Vivian's connections to get into headquarters was pure fantasy.

"Without the big boss's approval, how could you suddenly get transferred to headquarters?" Jason's tone had turned cold.

Vivian forced herself to explain. "It must be because the PR department at headquarters happened to have an opening..."

Jason's face instantly turned livid.

"That's it?"

Grace hurried to ease the tension. "Even though Vivian isn't close to the big boss, getting transferred to headquarters is still a good thing for her."

Jason didn't bother to hide his displeasure.

"That's her good fortune—"

The implication was that it had nothing to do with him.

He wouldn't get any benefit from it.

"Vivian is family. Her good news is our family's good news." Grace forced a smile.

Jason glared at her fiercely. "She's your family!"

Grace was completely stunned.

Her husband had explicitly called Vivian family before. Now he was denying it outright?

He even yelled at her in front of her cousin. It was as if he didn't respect her at all.

Had he invited Vivian to dinner today just to use her connections?

Jason frowned irritably.

"I have things to do. I'm leaving!"

He threw those words over his shoulder and walked away without looking back.

Frustration burned inside him.

Today had been a complete waste of time.

If he had known Vivian wasn't involved with the big boss, he never would have invited her to dinner.

He had hoped to use his sister-in-law to curry favor with the big boss and gain benefits.

It was all just empty dreams.

Since Vivian hadn't latched onto Liam Sullivan, why should he keep toasting her?

A woman abandoned by her family, down on her luck—she wasn't worth his effort to please.
