Chapter 602

The hospital corridor was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Sophia Miller leaned against the wall outside the hospital room.

The cigarette between her fingers had burned down halfway.

She wasn't smoking it.

She just stared blankly at the wisp of bluish-gray smoke.

Grace Harper came up from the stairwell.

She carried two takeout boxes in her hands.

"Still no change?" Grace asked in a hushed voice.

Sophia shook her head.

They exchanged a look.

The same worry was reflected in each other's eyes.

Inside the room, Vivian Bennett sat on a chair by the window.

She wore an oversized hospital gown.

Her whole body was so thin it seemed a breeze could carry her away.

Outside the window, the sky was overcast.

Gray clouds hung low, as if ready to collapse at any moment.

She just sat there.

Her eyes were fixed on the window, yet she seemed to see nothing.

It had been three days.

From the moment she left the operating room until now, she hadn't spoken a single word.

She didn't cry.

She didn't make a scene.

She didn't even show any expression.

Sophia pushed the door open and entered.

She placed the takeout boxes on the bedside table.

"Vivian, you should eat something."

Vivian didn't move.

Sophia walked over and crouched in front of her.

She took Vivian's cold hands in hers.

"I know you're hurting."

"If you want to cry, then cry."

"If you want to scream, then scream."

"Just don't keep it all bottled up like this."

Vivian's eyelashes fluttered slightly.

But they soon settled back into stillness.

Sophia's eyes reddened.

She would rather Vivian break down in hysterical sobs.

She would rather Vivian smash the room to pieces.

She would rather Vivian curse everyone in sight.

Anything was better than this.

Like a delicate porcelain doll.

One touch and she might shatter.

Grace also entered the room, her phone in hand.

She hesitated, then spoke.

"Liam Sullivan... there's news."

Sophia's head snapped up.

She shot Grace a warning look with her eyes.

But it was too late.

Vivian's fingers curled slightly.

It was a tiny movement, but Sophia felt it.

"Where is he?" Sophia asked in a low voice.

Grace handed over her phone.

On the screen was a photo.

Liam stood in the VIP passage of an airport.

Several black-suited bodyguards flanked him.

He wore sunglasses, his expression hidden.

But his posture was upright, his stride confident.

He didn't look at all like a man who had been missing for three days.

Even less like a man whose fiancée lay in a hospital bed after losing their child.

Sophia clenched her jaw.

She turned off the phone screen.

"Don't let her see this."

Grace nodded and put her phone away.

They stayed with Vivian a while longer.

Seeing she still showed no reaction, they reluctantly stepped out.

In the corridor, Sophia finally lit that cigarette.

"What did the psychologist say?"

"She said she's shut herself off emotionally."

Grace sighed.

"Someone needs to break through to her, to get her to let it out."

"Liam?"

"That's what the doctor suggested."

Sophia gave a cold laugh.

"Where is he now? With that Luna Clark?"

"I don't know."

Grace shook her head.

"The media caught him leaving the airport."

"He got into a black car."

"After that, there's been no trace."

"Bastard."

Sophia took a hard drag on her cigarette.

Then she stubbed it out irritably.

"Vivian is like this, and he's acting like nothing happened."

"Maybe... he has his reasons?"

"What possible reason could make him not even call?"

Sophia's voice rose.

"Vivian just had surgery."

"The baby is gone."

"Where is he?"

"Even if he just came to the hospital for one look, said one word, it would be better than this!"

Grace fell silent.

She couldn't think of a reason either.

Three days ago, when Vivian was wheeled into the operating room, Liam was still waiting outside.

But by the time Vivian woke up, he was gone.

His phone was unreachable.

No replies to messages.

As if he had vanished from the face of the earth.

Then came the flood of scandalous news.

Photos of Liam and Luna Clark spending a night together in a hotel.

Every major media outlet rushed to report it.

The headlines grew more and more vicious.

"Sullivan Group's heir finds new love, fiancée left alone in hospital after miscarriage."

"High-society engagement called off? Liam Sullivan makes high-profile airport appearance with new flame."

Sophia used all her connections to suppress the news about Vivian.

But she couldn't suppress the rumors about Liam.

Or perhaps, someone didn't want her to suppress them.

"Something feels off," Grace suddenly said.

"What?"

"Liam isn't that kind of man."

Grace frowned.

"Even if he really did fall for someone else, he wouldn't choose this moment."

"Vivian just had a miscarriage."

"Doing this would throw him directly into the storm."

"The Sullivan Group's stock is unstable right now."

"He wouldn't be so irrational."

Sophia froze.

She had been so consumed by anger, she hadn't thought that deeply.

"You mean..."

"Someone is targeting him."

Grace lowered her voice further.

"And whoever is targeting him likely wants to target Vivian too."

A chill ran down Sophia's spine.

She remembered the phone call Vivian received before the accident.

The woman who claimed to be Liam's mother.

"I'll look into it."

Sophia turned to leave.

"Wait."

Grace grabbed her arm.

"Don't rush. If someone really wants to harm Vivian, and you leave the hospital now, what if..."

She didn't finish, but they both understood.

Sophia gritted her teeth.

"Then I'll have AJ come over."

AJ was her bodyguard.

He had been with her for years and was highly skilled.

Grace nodded.

"Good."

After discussing, they returned to the room.

Vivian still sat by the window.

Her posture hadn't changed at all.

Sophia walked over and crouched before her again.

She spoke softly.

"Vivian, I know you can hear me."

"There might be more to Liam's situation."

"Don't condemn him just yet."

"Wait for him to come back."

"Hear his explanation, okay?"

Vivian's pupils moved.

Slowly, they turned toward Sophia.

It was the first reaction she had shown in three days.

A spark of hope ignited in Sophia's heart.

She was about to say more when she saw Vivian's lips part.

Her voice was so faint it was almost inaudible.

"The baby..."

Sophia's eyes welled up.

She squeezed Vivian's hand.

"Vivian, the baby... there will be others."

"You're still young."

"Recover your health, and in the future..."

"Gone."

Vivian cut her off.

Her tone was terrifyingly calm.

"My baby is gone."

After saying this, she turned her head back toward the window.

As if that brief moment of clarity had been just an illusion.

Sophia's tears finally fell.

She hugged Vivian, her voice choked.

"Cry, Vivian."

"Please, just cry."

"It will make you feel better."

Vivian let herself be held.

She didn't move.

Like a puppet without a soul.

Grace's eyes also reddened.

She turned her face away.

Just then, a knock sounded on the door.

A nurse peeked in.

"Miss Miller, there's a Ms. Lin here to see Miss Bennett."

Sophia frowned.

"Who?"

"She says her name is Luna Clark."
