Chapter 31
Vivian Bennett collided abruptly with a scorching chest.
The scent of tobacco mixed with cedar instantly enveloped her.
She trembled.
Looking up, she met Liam Sullivan’s lowered gaze.
His eyes were deep like whirlpools.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Panic flashed and vanished.
She forced a calm smile. “Thank you.”
She tried to pull away.
Liam tightened his arm around her.
“Did you fall?” His voice was husky.
His breath brushed her ear.
Her ears burned. “I’m fine.”
She pushed subtly.
His palm remained seared against her waist.
The fabric was too thin.
The heat of his fingertips nearly scorched her skin.
Liam’s gaze darkened.
“Watch your step.” He finally released her.
Vivian murmured in agreement, her cheeks flushed.
The car stopped at that moment.
Ryan Johnson had driven to Emily Davis’s apartment first.
The rear door opened.
Emily was about to say goodbye when Vivian climbed out too.
“Why are you getting out?” Emily asked, surprised.
“I’ll come up for some water.” Vivian gripped her bag strap.
Emily looked uncomfortable. “My mom’s already asleep. Another time?”
“Is it inconvenient?” Vivian pressed.
“She’s a light sleeper. I’ll get scolded if I bring someone home.” Emily smiled wryly.
Vivian realized she lived with family.
It really wasn’t appropriate to disturb them so late.
“See you tomorrow.” Vivian waved.
Emily hurried away.
Vivian turned and froze.
The black Rolls-Royce was still there.
Ryan leaned out the window. “Miss Bennett, please get in.”
She hesitated, glancing at the back seat.
Liam’s profile was hidden in shadow, his expression unreadable.
The night breeze was cool.
Vivian finally opened the door.
Only the two of them remained inside.
She noticed immediately upon sitting.
Liam had moved closer without her realizing.
Their legs were almost touching.
Her spine stiffened.
The tips of her ears turned crimson.
She fanned herself nervously. “It’s so hot tonight...”
No one replied.
Only his heavy gaze pressed down on her.
